About Jeff Haws
|
My Brother, Matthew, once described me as a frustrated
Forest Ranger. It’s true and this is probably why I focus so much on nature and
all of it’s wonderful aspects in my photography. I am a licensed insurance agent
with the luxury of working in a small independent agency, in the city that I
live in, Tracy, CA. Since I have the blessing of not having to commute to work I
am able to delve further into this passion I have for photography by getting up
a dawn, not to follow the cars in front of me, but to catch the sunflower as it
brightens with the first light of day or a tree shrouded with the valley fog
that dulls the light but adds a new sensitivity to an otherwise harsh scene. You
can see from my photographs that catching the moment in photos of nature and the
intense closeness of macro photography are my passions and the central valley of
California offers me many venues. |

Living in a small town that is trying to grow has allowed me
many opportunities to photograph rural life very close to home. I also enjoy the
opportunity to escape to the Sierra Nevada mountains often enough to capture
seasonal changes. As I broaden my horizons I watch for new opportunities like
the rare 2005 rains that created a wild flower wonderland in Death Valley. I am
what I would classify as a hands on photographer, both learning as I do and by
studying the works of both the masters and amateurs alike. My earliest works
were done with 35mm on slide film. Today I work almost exclusively in digital.
My passion for photography is a natural outcome of my ‘Forest Ranger’ view of
life.
I have spent many summers camping with Boy Scout troops (as a
youth and as a leader). I enjoy many of the locations that I have camped like
Big Basin State Park, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Lassen National Park,
Yosemite National Park, and the Trinity Wilderness. As an adult, I have kept
involved in scouting and have continued my association with the beauties of the
outdoors.
Portrait photography still is a future desire of mine. At this time I am
preparing my skills, and I soon hope to present some quality character studies
with some willing subjects.
My current camera is a Canon 20D Digital SLR. It is an 8.3 megapixel camera. I
have also included the Canon 18-55mm lens and complemented it with the Quantaray
70-300mm TeleMacro Zoom Lens. I have been finding them both wonderful lenses. I
have also updated my photography equipment with a Quantaray QSX 9500 Tripod.
My most recent camera was a FinePix S20 Pro, which is still a
very useful camera. It is a 6.3 megapixel camera with 6x Optical Zoom, which has
produced some wonderful photos. I also work with the Macro and Super Macro
settings for flower and insect photos. The wide angle and telephoto lens
adapters work just as well on this as with the S5000. This S20 Pro has many
features of the Fuji DSLR’s.
My other FinePix digital camera is the FinePix S5000. It‘s been a delightful
camera that is 4 megapixel and has a 10x Optical Zoom. I have really enjoyed the
camera and feel it is a great starter camera. It has the added bonus of
having many optional items to make the whole experience very enjoyable.
